Daniël Vis

Live instrument playing for 8 poems by door Daniël Vis.

Doing stuff live in the moment for theater is one of the greatest games on earth. A jam between musicians, poets, actors. Sounddesign is a mater of knowing what the story is about and “hypnotize” the audience with sound that helps telling the exact story. In this way with only a few objects from my collection of sounding objects and self build instruments.

‘Binnenste buiten’

For this project I made music and soundscapes for a puppet play. I also made an Android app for the actors to trigger the music and soundscapes on a very easy and clear way via blue tooth on a tablet device together with a big bluetooth 2.1 system

I love to make these technical solutions voor musical applications. I learned new software specially for this project to get this system working.

‘Surreal Main’

January 2009

Music for a dance-theater piece.

The assignment was to use an acoustic instrument and edit it. No fixed pulse used in the music and interpret surrealism.

I recorded playing an udu and edit it. With FM synthesis i made a patch. And from all this came a few compositions. This is one of them.

Canned Live
A live performance with my soundinstallation ‘Canned’ and self made instruments.

A legendary loved one, a harnessed witch, a world in chaos. The naked Sylphide Fidessa. In the world of her beloved knight Sons-Joye, Where everyone wears armor and nakedness is seen as a deadly sin, unleashes a fierce and irreversible battle.

In this project a use multiple instruments and my own made mouth controller. I’ve been interested in Arduino projects for a while. This knowledge can always help when certain products don’t exists and you want to interact the world with sound via sensors.

Ik heet Finn.

Presentation about Finn, a he born as a she. Performed by Hilde Segond Von Banchet.
This is the soundtrack made for a part of the show.

For this interactive performance i had to make soundtracks that could intensify or calm down live on stage when needed. For this i made tracks that consisted of multiple layers that could be added live by sliding faders. This was needed as we never knew when things happened on stage and i had to anticipate in the moment.

‘Welcome in this world. This is a new world.’

Grensgenoten(Border Fellows)is the graduation performance of Rodrik Biersteker for the Utrecht School of Arts. Fifteen people come together in an empty theatre for 45 minutes. On stage, there are fifteen boxes. One each. With the contents of the box, a voice-over that suggests them what to do, these people start to rearrange the space: borders are being drawn, houses are build, groups are formed. In 45 minutes a micro community is build. And destroyed again.

This project grew out of a series of experiments dealing with the question what the role of a theatrical space could be in a world where we are plugged in to media sources 24 hours a day.

I play live as gerauschmacher different instruments like a diatonic accordion and am disguised as a vagabond to provide live sounds anticipating on the actors movement and timing.

A physical theater show directed by Irina Andreeva.
I traveled to Prague with a suitcase full of instrument and a handheldrecorder and my laptop to be as versatile as possible on the road.

Kidnapped is an experimental theater piece in which the technique of the OCZ NIA is in central. OCZ NIA is a brain-wave volt meter that measures brain activity and facial expressions.

These volt data communicates with a Max-MSP patch (written by Nick Lammertyn) connected to virtual musical instruments. What you can do with this complete system is sound-manipulating with thought control.

In this exciting piece of theater you’ll see an actor beeing tortured by pain, light flashes and many other irritations.

Kidnapped shows that not only acting in the exterior, but may have to be in such a way with the method acting, also the interior of an actor can be used.
