Finally, you have your beautiful handpan. To keep it looking its best, it requires some care.
Don’t leave your handpan in the sun. When playing outside on warm, sunny days, opt for the shade.
Store your handpan in a dry place, outside of its bag or case. If moisture accumulates within the bag or case, it won’t evaporate and can cause oxidation on the instrument.
When travelling with your handpan, it’s a good idea to apply a thin layer of oil to it. Consider using products like ‘Ballistol’ or ‘Froglube’. The worst environment for your handpan is the beach or close to the sea. The air is filled with microscopic salt particles, which can be harmful to your handpan. If you do take it to the sea, prepare your handpan with a good layer of oil. After your seaside visit, store your handpan with these steps:
- Clean your instrument (only the outside, not the inside) with a little water and dish soap using a microfiber cloth.
- Use a damp microfiber cloth to remove the soap residue.
- Dry your instrument using a dry microfiber cloth.
- Rub a thin layer of oil onto your handpan with a microfiber cloth.
Rust can occur. To avoid it entirely, keep your handpan oiled, both inside and out.
